Android Apps on Google Play

Android 17 beta releases are here, shedding light on confirmed features and Google’s plans. It was designed by then-Google graphic designer Irina Blok on November 5, 2007, when Android was announced. At Google I/O in May 2016, Google announced Daydream, a virtual reality platform that relied on a smartphone and provided VR capabilities through a virtual reality headset and controller designed by Google itself. Android is developed by Google until the latest changes and updates are ready to be released, at which point the source code is made available to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), an open source initiative led by Google. Why doesn’t the Google Play Store work even after installing the APK?

If you’d like to try the changes ahead of its stable rollout, you can already do so, starting with Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1. As such, we’re labeling these features as “carry over features” as they technically went live with Android 16, but will most likely reach the wider Android platform with Android 17. These features are live on Pixel phones running Android 16, kudosbet but Android OEMs could adopt them as part of the Android 17 platform update. Live Updates is one of the highlight features of Android 16, but it was absent from the first stable Android 16 release. You can see a gray, circular button located after the divider separating pinned and recent apps. To address this, Google added the taskbar overflow button with the release of Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2. When long-pressing an app icon in the app drawer, you’ll see a “pin to taskbar” shortcut in the context menu, while you’ll see an “unpin from taskbar” shortcut when long-pressing an app icon on the taskbar.
On supported devices, Google has significantly reduced the number of attempts required to guess a PIN or password. This mainly refers to Remote Lock and Theft Detection Lock features, which will now be enabled by default on all new Android 17 devices, as well as those that are freshly reset or upgraded to Android 17. This ensures a consistent user experience with distinct icons while reusing existing watch role permissions. Within Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2, we found code for a third companion device profile for third-party apps, specifically the “Medical” profile. Instead of requesting permissions one by one, these apps can use a device profile to show a single, bundled permission prompt.

You can choose to have notifications, ringtones, and alarms play on your connected hearing aid or on your device’s built-in speaker. Android 17 Beta 3 lets users independently manage where specific system sounds are played in their hearing device. For example, you’ll be alerted when the clock has changed for daylight saving time. With Android 17 Beta 3, users can now receive alerts when their phone’s clock performs a scheduled change. Now, the Android OS will automatically enter your SIM card PIN when you enter your device’s lock code upon rebooting Once they’ve activated this toggle, they’ll be prompted to enter their SIM card’s current PIN.

Less intrusive phone call notifications

Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1 introduced subtle background blur (as mentioned above) to specific parts of the Android UI, namely the notification shade, Quick Settings panel, and Recents screen. These changes were spotted and enabled in Android 16 Beta 4 and are widely available in Android 16 QPR1 Beta 1, but they are unlikely to be available in the Android 16 stable release. With Android 16 Beta 3, Google is giving app developers a chance to test if their apps are affected by this upcoming change. Local Network Protection will eventually require apps to request specific permission to access the local network. Later QPR betas give us even more features that can be chalked up to the next platform release, unless they are completely Pixel-exclusive.
You can now configure it to launch a specific app of your choosing, expanding on the previous options (middle click, launch Google, go home, go back, or view recent apps). Android 16 QPR2 delivers a variety of new features for touchpads and mice, including expanded gesture actions and robust accessibility options. Previously restricted to the Downloads folder, the terminal can now access nearly all shared storage — essentially, any file or folder visible to your standard file manager.

Storage

This is useful for multitasking scenarios, such as a video conferencing app keeping video call controls accessible while the user navigates other apps. Previously, changes to the media volume would typically automatically affect the Assistant volume and vice versa. With the Android Canary 2511 release, Google quietly implemented a change that automatically enables wireless debugging when a device connects to a trusted network.
